Aims:
- Understand the definition of culture and cultural competence
- To explore how our own beliefs and attitudes can shape how we respond to aspects of other cultures, particularly religion and language
- Explore models for culturally competent social work practice
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the components of cultural competence identify how these help to promote more effective interventions
- Begin to appreciate the complexities involved in being self-aware and implications
- Understand and recognise unconscious bias
- Understand the difference between a stereotype and a generalisation
- Begin the process of identifying and selecting appropriate practical approaches, recognising what is important as knowledge
