Aims:

  • Understand the definition of culture and cultural competence
  • To explore how our own beliefs and attitudes can shape how we respond to aspects of other cultures, particularly religion and language
  • Explore models for culturally competent social work practice

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the components of cultural competence identify how these help to promote more effective interventions
  • Begin to appreciate the complexities involved in being self-aware and implications
  • Understand and recognise unconscious bias
  • Understand the difference between a stereotype and a generalisation
  • Begin the process of identifying and selecting appropriate practical approaches, recognising what is important as knowledge
