Detail:
Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) What are Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and why do foster carers need to understand what they are.
Learning outcomes:
• What is now known about the impact of a mother’s alcohol use on the developing foetus. • How will that present when the child is born. • Will all babies whose mothers drink alcohol during pregnancy have FASD and does the impact vary. • How do we talk to people about FASD and how to avoid or reduce the risk. How do we motivate people who at first don’t want to know. • Is all of the damage to these babies irreparable? What might be able to be improved. • How can they be supported with their physical health and development. • What challenges face children with FASD. • How can we work with children who have FASD to improve their experience of childhood. • What approaches can help the child to develop improved self-esteem and confidence through positive relationships and support. • How can foster carers provide an environment which can maximise the child’s quality of life.
