This course is run over two separate sessions, with the first session being in-person, and the second online.

  • 11/10/24 in person and 18/10/24 online (both sessions must be attended)
  • 17/01/25 in person and 24/01/25 online (both sessions must be attended)
  • 14/03/25 in person and 21/03/25 online (both sessions must be attended)
  • 16/05/25 in person and 23/05/25 online (both sessions must be attended)

Participants will explore the concepts of abuse, self-defence and retaliation, and model the use of evidence-based tools for assessing risk, and planning safety, including and understanding complexities of working in cases that involve counter-allegations. Participants will become familiar with established multi-agency safeguarding and protection processes. Participants will trial and critique ways to draw on the voice of victims of all ages through direct work. 

Audience - This should be attended by staff or volunteers who work in the health sector, social work, education settings and those who work in a safeguarding role and have responsibility for directly dealing with disclosures of domestic abuse and sexual violence, and/or supporting victims and survivors. Delegates should have a good understanding of domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Learning aims:

  • Develop understanding of the concepts of abuse, self-defence and retaliation
  • Raise awareness of perpetrator typologies
  • Understand the complexities of working in cases that involve counter-allegations
  • Explore indicators that may help to identify who is abusing whom
  • Awareness of harmful sexual behaviour in adults and children and young people and the need for appropriate and proportionate assessment and intervention.
  • Share tools and processes for ensuring that the voices and experiences of children and young people as victims in their own right are captured through direct work.
  • Consider immediate crisis and safety planning (building on level 2)
  • Understanding of MARAC, MAPPA and key agencies, processes and pathways
  • Raise awareness of the DASH / DARA risk assessment processes.
