The aims of the course are:

  • To raise awareness and increase the understanding of domestic abuse in later life
  • To understand approaches where Dementia sufferers are perpetrators of domestic abuse
  • Recognise and explore some of the barriers that older victim/survivors may face when seeking support for domestic abuse
  • Developing subject knowledge through case studies and identifying best practice methods of protection and incident response
  • To provide an overview of the Specialist Domestic Abuse Service that West Mercia Women’s Aid provides.

The learning objectives are

  • For all to recognise how to identify victimisation in older people, manage disclosures and develop subject knowledge.

Target Audience:

  • Children and Young People Directorate - All Social Care Staff
  • Adult Social Care - All Social Care Staff
  • Multi-agency professionals who work with children or adults

Course Pre requisites:

It is recommended that learners have attended a domestic abuse awareness course such as 'Curiosity Saves Lives' or equivalent. Prior to the course, learners should have an understanding of domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour. Delegates should be aware of the complexities of domestic abuse, including the impact of the abuse on the victim/survivor.
