Detail:

The overall aim of this one day course is to develop assessment and risk management skills, working with individuals whose drug and alcohol use are presenting safeguarding concerns.

Learning Outcomes :

  • Exploration of themes of ‘contact’ in our inter-personal and intra-personal relationships
  • Describe a model of psychological dependence; integrated within a person-centred approach
  • Identify ways in which the family – as a system - can adapt to substance dependence, and how a child's apparent behavioural 'resilience' may be misleading
  • Identification of drug types and potential risk factors
  • Examine cultural attitudes towards substance use, and the potential impact on risk behaviour
  • Describe a model of physical risk associated with substance use
  • Identify a range of safeguarding factors associated with substance use
  • Demonstrate skill in applying an information sharing protocol for joint working with specialist treatment services

The course has been designed to be participative in nature; encouraging peer discussion, feedback and case study analysis. For each exercise, there will be an opportunity to reflect on the material and consider how the ideas could assist you in your practice.
