REMEMBER TO COVER YOUR TRACKS

Trainer Martin Lakeman has an extensive background in both law enforcement and safeguarding and works with a range of organisations, including the NHS, the Fire Service and schools. Previously a Detective Superintendent with West Mercia Police, Martin is an Associate trainer for the national charity SafeLives - delivering the national programme around coercive control to the Police Service.

Following the success of the Curiosity Saves Lives domestic abuse training offered previously; we are pleased to offer this course on six separate, individual and singular dates from now up until the end of March 2024.

We know that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse within their lifetime. This pervasive crime cuts across all demographics of society regardless of gender or sexuality. Currently, it is estimated that 1 in 5 children grow up experiencing domestic abuse and children are now recognised as victims in their own right. On average victims experience 50+ incidents before they tell anyone what is happening. A study by Safe Lives (Domestic Abuse charity) suggested that 85% of victims sought help on average 5 times from professionals in the year before they got effective help. We need to be able to identify, signpost and support victims  - and reinforce the principle of “Getting it right first time”.

Professional Curiosity and Domestic Abuse

Tackling domestic abuse is everyone’s business, but it can be daunting for professionals. It’s complex, challenging, uncomfortable, emotional and tests us to see beyond what we want to see. Sometimes we worry about data protection, GDPR and Human Rights legislation when in fact there is a wealth of legislation that allows us to share information around vulnerability and concerns. This training equips professionals with the knowledge and confidence to identify, support and empower victims, helps them to have that 'difficult conversation', and provides wider knowledge of the specialist support services that exist for victims.

Target Audience

This course is for practitioners, professionals and those that wish to learn more about the impact of domestic abuse and how to initially support a victim/ survivor.
